The Power of Touch in Somatic Movement Therapy

Pilates Teachers, Remedial Pilates Therapists, and any Somatic Movement Teachers should consider adding tactile cueing to their tool boxes.

I often work one-on-one with clients or in small group classes to address specific health concerns that the clients may present with, such as chronic pain, mental health issues, or recovery from injury. A tailored program to meet individual need is on offer each session. Rapport building is important because every individual is different, so the communication, guidance is different.

As a therapist in diverse Movement practices for the past 17 years, I have devised programs to assist particular health conditions or reduce pain.  To provide personalised care and focus with my clients ‘Therapeutic Touch' may be the best approach and requires developing the skills to touch ethically, responsibly and skilfully. Of course, prior permission must be obtained as is established in the first session, Body Reading and Postural Assessment.

Touch is essential for physical, psychological and spiritual evolving . Touch is amazing and very powerful. It can be used as guidance for the clients  to understand where and how to feel the alignment and to deepen understanding of proprioception and interoception. FAMO Fascia Movement Practice touch is a great tool to assist in the explanation of multidimensional  exercises that require more fine tuning and body awareness.  Touch can be powerful in helping to balance the Autonomic Nervous System and body signal awareness.

Stress manifests in many ways in each person, and I have found a helping hand or soft touch can lower stress levels and anxiety, making the person feel safe in the environment they're in. Chronic Stress can be managed by allowing the client to feel safe, supported and empowered.

Sometimes long winded cues can be annoying and perhaps also confusing. Touch is immediate and can help to feel how the body moves in space. It evokes feelings and emotions and it helps Practitioners and Teachers to not only view the physical body but also to understand the students’ inner landscape.

I have also had great response to the new gained skill I am offering at my crystal therapy sessions. Chi -Activaton is a wonderful way to offer spiritual support, rebalancing the bodies’ energy system.

Touch helps not only to address symptoms, it can help to find the underlying causes. It can help anyone to feel more relaxed, allowing crystals and Chi activation energy to flow more freely. This potentially activates deeper levels of healing.

It helps to improve mental clarity and to release tension.

Being grounded as a Practitioner helps hugely and it is necessary to apply techniques so student and clients feels supported, safe and more themselves.
